Rain, Rain Go Away!

Saturday 3rd February 2018

Well the weather forecasters nearly got it right. It was supposed to rain all day, but at 9.30 it stopped for 3 hours allowing us to come out and play!!

Under the Canopy

It was another effort to get things ready for the Monday Crew on Platform 1. Removing some of the excess concrete and placing sand & gravel to achieve a level surface for additional slab laying.

In the first two photos are Keith S and John S tidying up the edging, placing sand & gravel where relevant and using a gauge for accurate levelling. Sand & gravel is being brought around to the platform by Clive and Phil.

Landscaping

Vic, your Blog writer, is placing topsoil in the area behind the telephone box. Still more to do on Wednesday!

Lamp Posts

We had a contract electrician attend today, sorting out the wires for the lamp posts. Mike S also worked on each post and sorted out the glass for fitting in the tops.

Bonfire and the Needles

Graham, Robin, Vic and Stuart collected all the rubbish generated from last Monday and Wednesday, moving it over to the area reserved for our bonfire. Graham and Phil also raked the lower end of the footpath, removing all the pine needles and getting the path ready for tarmacing.

Footings

The footings for the bridge and canopy extension required ballast to fill the holes. Using the mini digger and our dumper, several loads were brought up the drive and tipped into the said holes.  John C operating the digger, Tony driving the dumper and Clive, Peter and Neal spreading the ballast and compacting.

Finial

At the rear of the kitchen area, we are installing modesty screens. Two of the posts have been fitted with their Finials but one needed a bit of adjustment and Peter, with the help of Stuart, endeavoured to remove the excess metal so that it would fit.

Building Services

Building Services were with us again today excavating drainage.

Additional Photos.

Phil kindly sent me some end of day photos showing the latest on the tiling and Platform 1 preparation.

Blast From The Past

Fencing

Over the years we have worked on various fencing at Broadway Station. Here are a few pictures of their installation.

  1. The platform alongside the build is looking the part now. The slabs make all the difference.
Likewise the floor tiling in the booking hall is really coming along and looks wonderful.
It's nice to see that the footbridge and canopy support concrete has not been forgotten as well.
The gentlemans' toilet is looking more like as well. Only needs the fittings in there and it will be superb.
Well done ALL the BAG workers! Not to forget B&S as well.
    Regards, Paul.

    1. To be pedantic, it's the lady's not the gentleman's depicted. The entrance is configured differently, and I think the gents is already floortiled.

  2. Thanks for the update, Vic. You're getting pretty good at this! I wonder if anyone has thought of using "Grasscrete" for the parking area where the bric-a-brac shed used to be? It would provide a hard surface for parking, but would look like grass from afar. The plastic version looks pretty easy to install - just a sand foundation then infill with topsoil.

  3. Many thanks for your update again. So good to see things coming along well even in poor weather.

  4. Well, everything seems to be coming along wonderfully. But I can see you still have a lot to do. No wonder you're all so busy !

It is good to see the work on the platform area south of the station building is nearing fruition. I presume you'll soon be ready for the paving. Is it going to be paving ? I've forgotten !

Forgive the question, but why are they spreading netting at the rear of Platform 2 ?

Very well done, as always, brave volunteers.

    Good luck

    1. Sorry ! I meant to say NORTH of the station building where you've been busy back filling the holes dug for the footbridge and canopy foundations. I can see all is going well !

    2. The netting is for the base of the stairs on platform 2?

    3. There may be paving at the north end of the Station Building where the canopy & bridge stairways will be, I'm not sure. The remainder, in time, will be tarmac although, originally, gravel chippings would be used - great for kids to kick everywhere.
If you look closely where the netting is on Platform 2, you can see the excavations of the remains of the Platform 2 waiting room. This will be the next build I guess and, because the ground there is very uneven, it needs to be fenced off - at least, that's my assumption.

    4. Well, I've taken a closer look and I think Toddington Ted is right. When you zoom in on the photo, the netting appears to have been erected to form a cordon. Looking at another photo, the same thing appears to be happening at the foot of Station Approach. I can't help wondering why.

    5. The orange netting surrounds the foundations and holes for the footbridge steps on platform 2. There are no waiting room foundations at the moment.

    6. I know there are no Platform 2 foundations at the moment but I'm sure when I went on the guided tour last year there were some excavated remains of the old waiting room.

  5. Has anyone yet come up with a solution for disguising the location cabinets? I really do spoil the ambience of a beautiful place.

    1. Yes, they will be boarded over with wooden panels and painted whatever the authentic colour is for such things - I guess, I have no idea really. The GWSR has already done this with the plastic yellow salt/grit boxes at Winchcombe.

    2. My guess is that those cabinets are way too big for what they contain. If you look at the 6th picture above, there are around 7 or 8 cables for the platform lights and the lid of a termination box a foot square on the ground. You could probably get the necessary bits into a cabinet of at most 25% the size.

    3. Another thing could do with disguising is the white meter box lid on the southern side wall, sometimes these are brown

    4. I think that will get hidden by the bins, which in turn should get hidden by the modesty screen.

    5. the white meter box lid on the southern side wall has already been painted in to match the canopy

  6. I agree after looking at the photo Peter Lee mentioned above, unless the cabinet is to house other things as well, after all its only low power. At least below the fence height. In the past I have daisy chained wired lighting with source internally, even in groups if there is a lot.

    1. I also have to agree that the lineside cabinets do look out of place on the platforms. If a junction box for the Platform is required in the positions where the cabinets are then perhaps smaller boxes could be used that are easier to hide. There are commercially available ones available as used for traffic lights etc.

Do you plan to have socket outlets at these positions as well?

    2. These grey metal cabinets would look out of place anywhere. Here in the towns and cities, BT visually seem to have made a much better job of providing relatively unobtrusive metal cabinets which house junction boxes for the recently laid fibre optic cables.

I would have thought the GWSR could disguise these horrible metal cabinets, so visually obtrusive on station platforms, with some sort of wood cladding, coated with a dark wood preservative. That would look infinitely better.
